Play to Earn Blockchain MMORPG Mir 4 Hits over 1 Million Concurrent Users, More Popular than World of Warcraft

  • Play-to-earn MMORPG Mir 4 hit over 1 million peak concurrent users worldwide and over 2 million monthly active users.
  • Mir 4 has more concurrent players than World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV combined, demonstrating the power of play-to-earn.
  • Mir 4’s popularity has only increased since this 1 million figure has been reported.
  • Play-to-Earn blockchain MMORPGs are the future of MMOs.

The hit play-to-earn MMORPG Mir 4 hit over 1 million concurrent users on October 27th, 2021 according to WeMade, the company’s South Korean developer. The 1 million concurrent player figure was reported on WeMade’s latest earnings report along with another interesting stat – the game hit over 2 million monthly active users. Since October, Mir 4’s playerbase on Steam has increased significantly from an average of 46,000 concurrent in October to 71,5000 in November and has since stabilized around 62,000 in January, 2022. When WeMade reports their Q4 2021 earnings report next month, we should get an updated figure on the game’s peak concurrent users.

1 million concurrent users is an incredible feat and is easily larger than the biggest PC MMORPGs in the world. While no official data on ‘concurrent users’ exists for World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV, neither game comes close to a million concurrent users. Final Fantasy XIV’s existing server infrastructure only supports 50,000 players per logical data center and with 3 servers the game currently hits a peak concurrent figure of 150,000 players. World of Warcraft today is likely similar in size to Final Fantasy XIV, which makes Mir 4 bigger than both World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV combined. This isn’t exactly a fair comparison though, as both World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV require a subscription to play while Mir 4 is totally free to play. Mir 4 is also available on both PC and Mobile while these other game’s aren’t.

Dungeon Fighter Online may be a better comparison to Mir 4 as it’s a free to play MMORPG and also the world’s most successful MMORPG (Dungeon Fighter Online earned over $15 billion in lifetime revenues). Dungeon Fighter Online in its absolute peak hit 3 million concurrent users (mostly in China) back in 2012.

The ongoing success of Mir 4 demonstrates the power of play-to-earn gaming and its ability to attract players. While the core gameplay in Mir 4 is lackluster, the crypto elements and its newly announced DeFi / GameFi features, has players engaged. Mir 4 looks and plays like a traditional mobile MMORPG and while its far from perfect, it’s easily the most fleshed out and polished play to earn MMORPG out there.

WeMade plans on launching more games on their WeMix blockchain platform in the coming months. Time will tell if they reach the same level of success as Mir 4, but the success of Mir 4 has catapulted WeMade into the big leagues. Play-to-earn isn’t just a fad, it’s here to stay.
